Prof. Joachim Wiemeyer
Prof. Wiemeyer has an academic background in economics, political science, and Catholic theology. He completed his studies in Munster, where he received his doctorate in economics, a licentiate in Catholic theology, and his habilitation in Christian social ethics. From 1993-1998, Prof. Wiemeyer was a professor of social policy and political science at the Catholic University for Applied Science in Osnabrueck/ Vechta. Then, from 1998-2021, he taught at Catholic-Theology Faculty of Ruhr-University Bochum as a professor of Christian social ethics. In addition to his academic work, Prof. Wiemeyer has been a member of the expert group “World Economy and Social Ethics” of the German Bishops' Conference since 1989 - where he also fulfilled the role of advisor for the Caritas Commission. His current research focus reflects his academic background and encompasses:
global economy
ethics of digitization
economics of Church and charity
the future of the welfare state.
Prof. Wiemeyer will be teaching "Solidarity in the Global Economy" for the Solidarity Summer School. His course will look at the relationship between global markets and solidarity and examine the limits of international solidarity. Students will learn how solidarity affects the present, as well as the relationship between the present and future generations in terms of such pressing issues as climate change and environmental protection.
