The Solidarity Summer School emerged from the program resolution made by the Scientific and Program Council of the International Center for Research on the Phenomenon of Solidarity (MCBFS), which was also addressed to Pope Francis. Members of the board were consulted and participated in the preparations for the Summer School.

Prof. Joachim Wiemeyer has an academic background in economics, political science, and Catholic theology. He completed his studies in Munster, where he received his doctorate in economics, licentiate in Catholic theology, and habilitation in Christian social ethics. From 1993-1998, Prof. Wiemeyer was a professor of social policy and political science at the Catholic University for Applied Science in Osnabrueck/ Vechta. Then, from 1998-2021, he taught at Catholic-Theology Faculty of Ruhr-University Bochum as a professor of Christian social ethics. In addition to his academic work, Prof. Wiemeyer has been a member of the expert group “World Economy and Social Ethics” of the German Bishops´ Conference since 1989 - where he also fulfilled the role of advisor for the Caritas Commission. His current research focus reflects his academic background and encompasses the global economy, the ethics of digitization, economics of Church and charity, and the future of the welfare state. Prof. Wiemeyer will be teaching "Solidarity in the Global Economy" for the Solidarity Summer School. His course will look at the relationship between global markets and solidarity and examine the limits of international solidarity. Students will learn how solidarity affects the present, as well as the relationship between the present and future generations in terms of such pressing issues as climate change and environmental protection.
Prof. Rocco Buttiglione is an Italian philosopher and politician, as well as a longtime parliamentarian and a former minister for European affairs. He connected his scientific career with the University of St. Pius V in Rome, where he currently teaches political science. Prof. Buttiliogne was also a professor at the International Academy of Philosophy in Liechtenstein and head of the philosophy department at the Pontifical Lateran University. Since 1978, his research interests have focused on Polish culture and the philosophical personalism of the Lublin school, especially Karol Wojtyła. At the Solidarity Summer School, Prof. Buttiliogne will conduct class on Solidarity as a Response to the Problems Resulting from the Globalization of the Economy and Socio-cultural Life.
Prof. Stefano Zamagni is a Professor of economics at the University of Bologna, a member of the Human Development and Capability Association, and the president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. He is the author of numerous books and articles on welfare economics, consumer behavior theory, social choice theory, economic epistemology, ethics, history of economic thought, and civic economy. Prof. Zamagni will be teaching a class on "Solidarity in Europe" for the Solidarity Summer School.
Rev. Prof. Władsław Zuziak is a Polish philosopher, ethicist, and professor of humanities. In 1977, he obtained a Master's degree in theology from the Pontifical Faculty of Theology. In 1985 he began doctoral studies at the Catholic University of Louvain. On June 19, 1990, Rev. prof. Zuziak published and defended his dissertation The Metaphysical Foundations of Human Action by J. Maritain (L'agir humain et ses fondements métaphysiques chez Jacques Maritain), thereby obtaining his Ph.D. degree in philosophy. In 1999, he received the degree of habilitation in the humanities in the field of philosophy. In 2013 he obtained the title of professor. Rev. Prof. Zuiak was the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy (2002–2006) and the rector of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow (2010–2014). He was vice-president of the European Federation of Catholic Universities of Europe (FUCE). Currently. Rev. Prof. Zuziak is the is the director of the Management Board of the International Center for Research on the Phenomenon of Solidarity and a member of the Council of the Solidarity Heritage Institute for the 2019-2024 term. His research interests include: human philosophy, ethics, personalism, French philosophy, ethics in public life. Rev. Ptof Zuziak will be teaching "The Ethics of Solidarity in Poland: the Role of John Paul II and Józef Tischner" at the Solidarity Summer School.
Our teachers
Dr. Hernán Guerrero Troncoso completed his BA and MA in Philosophy at the University of Chile, in Santiago. He wrote and defended his Ph.D. in Philosophy at the Pontifical University "Antonianum" in Rome on the subject of being and language in John Duns Scotus. He has been a professor for eight years in Chile and was the main researcher in the project "Primacy of ens or primacy of res. A comparative study between Henry of Ghent and John Duns Scotus", funded by the Chilean agency FONDECYT. He's the author of several articles on the history of philosophy, ranging from Parmenides to Nietzsche, and has given conferences and lectures in Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Italy, and Poland. He is a visiting professor at the Pontifical University John Paul II in Krakow, Poland for the Philosophy in English program, and is a member of the Latin American Center for Scotistic and Late Medieval Studies (CLEET), as well as the SIEPM. He is currently working on an edition of book IV of the Commentary on Aristotle's Metaphysics by Peter of Alvernia, specifically an edition of the Commentary on the Sentences called "Ab Oriente", by Francis of Meyronnes. He is collaborating with prof. Garrett Smith on an edition of Robertus Anglicus' "Dialogus curiosus de formalitatibus". Dr. Guerrero Troncoso is also writing a monograph on the relation between Henry of Ghent and Baruch Spinoza on the infinite.
Rev. dr. hab. Miłosz Hołda is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Metaphysics and the Philosophy of Man in the Faculty of Philosophy at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow. He is a member of the European Society for Philosophy of Religion, as well as the Internationale-Ferdinand-Ebner-Gesellschaft.
Dr. Katarina Komenska, Ph.D. successfully finished her Ph.D. studies in Ethics at the University of Prešov, Slovakia in 2013. She worked as a research assistant for the following 7 years, while also becoming increasingly more interested in researching Global (bio)ethics and Humanitarian Ethics. In 2020, she decided to gain hands-on experience in this sector and joined an international humanitarian organization implementing humanitarian and development projects around the world. During this time, she supported programme operations in Iraq, Syria, and Moldova. Dr. Komenska's research interests are rooted in global bioethics, systematic ethics, and animal ethics. Some of her publications include the published study "Death, ethical judgments and dignity" (2018), the monograph "Animal ethics (from the perspective of ethics of social consequences)" (2014), and a chapter in the collective monograph "The Moral Motivation of Humanitarian Actors" (2018).
